Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS) is an effective and a popular method of treating chronic inflammation of the paranasal sinuses. It consists in the precise removal of changes within the sinuses that block their openings, which is the cause of disturbance of ventilation and proper drainage. Thanks to the use of optical endoscopes, the doctor creates a wide connection between the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses.
The treatment can be bypassed healthy areas and focus on the affected area. Importantly, FESS is an operation performed inside the nose and leaves no scarring on the patient’s face.
Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery is based on minimized surgical intervention, which focuses on the affected area. It is carried out with the use of surgical microtools that are inserted through the nostrils. It provides patients with benefits such as:
The patient should perform blood tests ordered during the consultation, and one week before endoscopy stop taking medications that thin the blood. You will also need to do an ECG of the heart, X-ray and computed tomography of the sinuses and consultation with an anesthesiologist. The patient must refrain from eating and drinking at least 6 hours before the procedure.
It is forbidden to play any sports or eat for a minimum of one week after the surgery, as well as drink beverages that increase blood pressure (alcohol, coffee). The patient should avoid effort and ruthlessly follow your doctor’s instructions.
