Labiaplasty helps to solve aesthetic, functional and psychological problems – because it directly influence our health, the level of self-esteem and well-being. It is the surgery to change the shape and aesthetics of the labia majora and small, performed in women whose body parts are deformed after childbirth, asymmetrical or overgrown. Patients who decide to undergo this type of procedure often not only feel unattractive or ashamed, this cosmetic defect may also cause problems while doing sports – they experience painful irritation and abrasions, chafes, and even recurrent infections.

Types of labiaplasty

Labiaplasty of the labia minora – the purpose of this procedure is to reduce (in the case of hypertrophy) or change in shape (elimination of asymmetry) of the mucosa fold surrounding the entrance into the vagina, aimed at improving the quality of patients’ life.

Labiaplasty of the labia majora due to atrophy – the skin in this place may get sagged with age and in connection with the significant weight loss. The treatment aims to recover the original labia filling to restore their elasticity and firmness. For this, an injection of patient’s fat is possible, or the use of fillers, e.g. hyaluronic acid. Combined labiaplasty is possible during one procedure with vaginoplasty.

Preoperative recommendations

The operation is preceded by a consultation visit to the plastic surgery clinic.

Before the procedure, the following tests should be performed:

  • blood group,
  • complete morphology with smear,
  • general urine test, coagulogram,
  • ECG – after 40 years of age,
  • electrolyte level,
  • ionogram,
  • HBS antigen,
  • anti HCV,
  • sugar level.

Before the planned procedure (for about 2 weeks), the following drugs should not be taken: aspirin or its derivatives (eg Acard), antitussive and anti-influenza drugs, and vitamin E. Agents are not recommended as they prolong bleeding during surgery. On the day of the planned surgery, you should not eat and drink. You should also take care of epilation of intimate zones.

Postoperative recommendations

  • After labiaplasty of the labia, the patient usually remains under observation in the clinic for one day. Usually, after a one-day hospitalization, she is discharged home.
  • The labia majora augmentation procedures do not require an overnight stay, but on the patient’s wish is possible.
  • A control visit to the clinic should take place after 7 days. The exact time will be determined by the doctor performing the procedure. Usually, the patient returns to complete physical activity after several days, the period of wound healing and the descent of the edema is individual, but most cases it takes around 7 days.
  • After labiaplasty of the labia minora it usually takes 6-8 weeks for complete sexual activity. After 3-4 weeks patient reaches complete sexual activity after enlargement of the labia majora.
  • After the procedure, it is possible to feel persistent pain which is relieved after administration over-the-counter painkillers or weak opioids – prescription.
  • Hygiene of the intimate place is a daily gentle washing with running water and liquid for intimate hygiene and drying the seams with a paper towel by touching, not rubbing. It is inadvisable to use bar soap, sponges and washcloths, as they can develop bacteria.
  • The healing wound can be lubricated with the ointment prescribed by the attending physician for faster healing and milder scarring of operated areas.
  • Meticulous adherence to postoperative recommendations is crucial in quick recovery and significantly affects the end result of the operation.
